Description

‘On This Day Earth Shall Ring’ is a handsomely-printed collection of 115 ancient and traditional carols, arranged and harmonized by Timothy Cummings for Scottish-style bagpipes. These carols, and a few aptly-titled dance tunes, were sourced from a large variety of carol collections, hymn books, pipe tune books, various recordings, and online sources. More than 20 nations and ethnic regions are represented, including eleven selections that are linked —in one way or another— to ‘pipes’ or specifically ‘bagpipes’. Both widely-known and obscure carols are included. (The full list of included carols can be found further below, after the audio samples.) A number of carols feature nontraditional notes such as C- and F-natural, but at least 90 are based solely on the standard nine notes of the common Scottish pipe chanter. Nearly every selection features at least one harmony part, chord symbols for accompanists, first-verse lyrics, additional background information, and suggestions for alternate drone tunings (for smallpipe players). The book is spiral-bound to stay open on your music stand.

…If anyone has brought together a more comprehensive, well-researched, informative, and well-presented book on the tunes related to Christmas… …then I’ve not seen it.”  ~ Piping Today Magazine (read the full review here)

  1. Rod Nevin

An excellent, well curated collection of seasonal tunes from other places and times, adapted to fit the pipes! I absolutely love this book, and have made good use of it. I have played these arrangements as solos in church, in friends’ homes at gatherings, and in public performances. I’ve had a delightful time playing many of these with friends joining in on other instruments, and making use of the harmonizations included. Many of the tunes have lyrics as well, and I’ve enjoyed singing while playing them. Tim’s studious historical notes and inclusion of illustrations from various artists (most of them showing pipers) makes this even more enjoyable. I keep coming back to this book for music, especially around Christmas time.

This collection is beautiful – familiar tunes and (surely) many that any player will be coming to for the first time. Many of them with beautiful harmonies. The paper quality is excellent, the images throughout, the little tune histories – the book is an experience. Especially around Christmas time, to be able to just sit down for a few hours to read, play, and look at this book is an excellent way to spend some time. I couldn’t recommend this collection highly enough.
