Description

This printed collection includes over 100 conventional hymn melodies adapted for Scottish-style bagpipes. It is a great resource for pipers who find themselves playing in churches, and for those looking for alternatives to ‘Amazing Grace’.

Features: a great source of unique melodies that can be arranged as slow airs; Key symbols for each hymn, to aid both pipers and their accompanists (i.e. ‘Amazing Grace’ sounds in the key of E-flat when played on Highland pipes); Several indexes to help locate a favorite hymn, or hymns appropriate for specific occasions and themes; Breath marks to help with phrasing and accompanying singers; Tips on performing with accompanists (organ, congregational singing, etc.); Represents a large variety of styles, origins, ethnicities, and denominational backgrounds; Some melodies feature alternate tunings, such as C- and F-natural; Spiral-bound for convenience; Easy to Moderate difficulty levels. (Organ/keyboard parts, chord symbols, and lyrics are not included.)

Selections include ‘Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah’ (common church version), ‘Simple Gifts’ (aka ‘Lord of the Dance’), ‘Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence’, ‘O Sing a Song of Bethlehem’, ‘Amazing Grace’ (common sung version), ‘Though I May Speak’, ‘O Come, All Ye Faithful’, ‘We Three Kings’, ‘O For a Thousand Tongues’, ‘Finlandia’, ‘O Come, O Come, Emmanuel’, ‘Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus’, ‘Wondrous Love’, ‘Here I Am, Lord’, ‘To God Be the Glory’, ‘Tallis’ Canon’, ‘O Worship the King’, ‘Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee’, and many more.

James Moyar, of Heritage Bagpipes and the Droning On podcast, has recorded many of these hymn tunes on Scottish smallpipes.  These tracks, along with recordings of a number of other hymn tunes not found in The Piper’s Hymnal, can be found on Bandcamp:

  1. Jim

Familiar tunes for a church-going piper or one who doesn’t frequent a place of worship, (lots of folk-song melodies, etc.) and so many tunes that I, at least, hadn’t heard before – all beautiful. There’s a full range in here – what might be considered, “high-brow,” and what might be called, “music of the people,” stuff from Europe, Africa – a really excellent collection.
