Description

‘WONDROUS LOVE’ (a.k.a. ‘What wondrous love is this?’) arranged for Highland pipes and organ duet by Timothy Cummings. A short but powerful arrangement of the beloved shape-note melody for Highland pipes (B-flat) and organ. Originally commissioned for a Lord of the Rings-themed church service in Wellington in 2002, this edgy setting captures some of the drama of the epic film score. Easy-to-moderate difficulty level. (Just under 2-and-a-half minutes).  Audio sample below (click ahead to 1:07 to skip intro):

[If you are seeking a bagpipe-only version of ‘WONDROUS LOVE’ with a harmony part derived from the traditional shape-note version, please see here. For a more contemporary bagpipe-only setting closer to what was published in ‘An Ift of Efts’ collection and recorded on Manawatu Scottish Pipe Band’s The Calling album, please see here. And if you are seeking the basic melody alone, without harmony parts, it is available for free here.]

This arrangement does the source material justice – powerful, strong, deep lines of melody & chords. This is the kind of thing that’ll rattle the chapel windows in the best possible way.
